The distinction between voluntarism and intellectualism has recently been criticized for inaccurately characterising early modern theories of divine freedom. In response, defenders the have argued that these labels are needed in order to account famous correspondence Leibniz (intellectualist) Clarke (voluntarist). this paper, I argue voluntarism/intellectualism is unable opposition Clarke. first part, provide an analysis Clarke’s theory freedom, show how he employs activity passivity separation God’s will intellect, which ultimately safeguards also analyse with Leibniz, deals choice among equals, principle sufficient reason, best. second on basis not a voluntarist, but should instead be interpreted as intellectualist (if one wants keep labels). Therefore, Leibniz-Clarke cannot explained clash intellectualism.
